JUST2CE: working towards an inclusive and just transition to a circular economy

Why is it important to develop a just transition to the circular economy? Focus on the political economy and geopolitics of the transition towards circularity and how existing power relations might hamper this much needed transition.

Most circular economy projects have focused on “how” to produce goods and services circularly but not really on “what” or “how much” to produce. The conviction underpinning the EU-funded JUST2CE project is that the success of a transition towards a sustainable circular economy does not merely depend on the development of new technologies, but also on how these technologies are being developed. Democracy, participation, gender and global justice are connected to the capacity of any society to reflect about what kind of technological futures its members desire. These aspects must be integrated in our journey to a just transition to sustainable economies.

In this session, participants will explore the concept of a circular economy and what transitioning to circularity implies for North-South relations; and how existing power relations might hamper this much needed transition.
